So how do you choose what to wear for your engagement photos?!
Engagement photos are one of the first things you do after popping the question and saying ‘yes’, but it’s no surprise that some couples struggle with them! Unlike planning your wedding day where you have inspiration and guidance from your planner, florist, rental company, and countless other vendors, often your engagement session is just you and the photographer. This leads me to our first suggestion in deciding your attire for your engagement shoot – get in touch with your photographer!
Chances are you have already established a decent relationship with your photographer because you took the time to choose someone whose work and style speaks to you in some way. Because of this, they are a great resource for you! They most likely will have already been to or scouted the location that you are shooting at, so they will also be able to give a great insight into what the environment is like as far as terrain, walkability and the landscaping. They will know what types of clothes work well in what environments.
After figuring out what functionality looks like and making adjustments based on that, when you are picking out pieces make sure you and your fiancé compliment each other without being completely matchy. Wearing the same color as each other will not give any depth to your photos, and who wants to look like they’re in a family photo from the 70s? Look up color palettes based around what colors you are envisioning. Pinterest will give you great palettes and mood boards if you search something like “blue color schemes” or “pink and green color schemes.”
Typically, we suggest two outfits but I honestly don’t see the harm in three if that’s what you really want and your photographer allows it! The key is to be more focused on the quality of the outfits you are wearing versus cramming several, mediocre outfits into the shoot. More outfits don’t mean more photos. Two is perfect for one more laid-back look if you’re going to be doing a little more walking in high grass or uneven ground and one more upscale style with a dress or heels where you won’t be moving around as much. Oh, and we definitely suggest at least one accessory that you really love! Whether that is a hat, a bold necklace, or jaw-dropping earrings, you’ll love have a piece to showcase who you are!
With that, make sure what you are wearing is a product of who you are as a couple. You will probably see tons of trendy styled shoots on social media while you are beginning your venture as a bride, but make sure whatever you choose is true to who you are! There’s nothing like looking back on your first photos together as an engaged couple and thinking “why did I wear that?”
We hope this helps you navigate one of your first adventures in this special season of life. Engagement season is coming up and we can’t wait to see the outfits you put together!
